Civil, Social, Political Education (CSPE) is a three year short course studied as part of the Junior Cycle. CSPE helps students understand how society works and what it means to be an active, responsible citizen in modern Ireland and the modern world through three areas- Rights and Responsibilities, Global Citizenship and Exploring Democracy. Through discussion, inquiry, and action projects, students learn how decisions are made, how communities function, and how individuals can make a positive difference. CSPE encourages students to think critically about real‑world issues, develop their own opinions, and build the skills needed to participate confidently and ethically in society.
Key Skills Developed in CSPE
Active citizenship skills — understanding how society works and how individuals can influence change
Critical thinking — analysing real‑world issues such as human rights, democracy, and social justice
Communication skills — expressing ideas clearly through discussion, debate, and project work
Research and enquiry — investigating community issues, laws, and global challenges
Decision‑making and problem‑solving — exploring solutions to social and political issues
Teamwork and collaboration — working with others on action projects and civic initiatives
Empathy and social awareness — understanding different perspectives and the impact of decisions on people and communities
Responsibility and leadership — taking initiative in class projects and contributing positively to school and community life
CSPE is taught through an active, student‑centred approach that connects classroom learning with real‑world issues. Lessons often involve examining current events, analysing case studies, and working on action projects that encourage students to engage with their school and wider community. This hands‑on, participatory approach helps students develop confidence, critical thinking, and a strong sense of social responsibility.
CSPE is a non-examination subject. One CBA is complete in the short course, completed in either second or third year.
CBA: Citizenship Action Project- This CBA gives students the opportunity to investigate a real issue related to citizenship, human rights, democracy, or community. Working individually or in groups, students research their chosen topic, take meaningful action, and individually reflect on what they have learned. The CSPE CBA helps students develop active citizenship skills, understand how society works, and see how their actions can make a positive difference.
