English – Subject Overview
English at Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle helps students develop confidence and skill in reading, writing and oral communication. Through studying a wide range of texts, including novels, plays, poetry, film and media, students learn how language works and how it shapes the world around them. The subject encourages creativity, critical thinking and clear expression, all of which support learning across the curriculum and prepare students for life beyond school.
Junior Cycle English
Junior Cycle English introduces students to a rich mix of literature and language. Students study a Shakespearean play, attend a live performance, explore studied novels, and engage with a wide range of poetry. They learn to respond personally and critically to texts while developing their own writing and speaking skills.
Students complete two Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs):
CBA 1: Oral Communication – an individual or group presentation on a chosen topic
CBA 2: The Collection of Student’s Texts – a portfolio of their best written work
Junior Cycle English aims to build strong literacy skills, encourage enjoyment of reading, and help students express themselves with clarity and confidence.

Senior Cycle English
Senior Cycle English deepens students’ understanding of literature, language and the human experience. Students study:
• A Shakespearean play
• A wide range of prescribed poetry
• Three texts for the Comparative Study, exploring themes, relationships and cultural contexts
They also develop advanced skills in analysis, critical thinking and structured writing. Through close reading of poetry, drama, fiction, film and non-fiction, students learn to interpret meaning, evaluate ideas and communicate effectively in a variety of genres.
Assessment Structure:
• Paper 1: Language – comprehension and composition
• Paper 2: Literature – poetry, Shakespeare, comparative study, unseen poetry
